I started making music when I was sixteen, after borrowing some instruments from school and a posh kid a few streets away. I was inspired by the bands I heard on John Peel’s radio show. Peel was my hero, and I discovered so much through him. Hearing bands like Butthole Surfers, Big Black, Joy Division, Wire, Killing Joke, Siouxsie and the Banshees, and Gaye Bykers on Acid blew me yarbles off, and made me realise that anyone can play guitar or make tunes, as dramatic ideas are far more important than musical virtuosity. If anything, the ‘rules’ hold you back. I recorded a demo tape by myself when I was eighteen, and my band was invited to London to do a Peel Session just three years later. It was all over in a flash, but I still make music to this day.
